MarioKart

Peach’s Picks Rating

Title:
MarioKart

ASIN:
B000XJNTNS

Manufacturer:
Nintendo Wii

Copyright:

Length:
A game lasts approximately 12 minutes depending on the player’s skill level

Plot Summary:
In this fast-paced video game, video brothers Mario and Luigi are included with a cast of 24 characters speeding around virtual race tracks that range from easy to difficult. Each character has unique skills that they may use to their advantage. A player chooses the Nintendo character they would like to assume for the race and they choose one of 36 vehicles to use while racing. A wide choice of vehicles is offered from motorcycles to go-carts. The character’s virtual weight determines the vehicle selection. The vehicles have several characteristics from which to choose and each offers the player advantages and disadvantages: speed, weight, acceleration, handling, drift, off-road capabilities, and mini-turbo. Thirty-two different race tracks are offered. Players can become a character and play alone against the game computer or multiple players can play against each other and the computer. There is an online option where players can compete with any other gamer that has internet connection any place in the world. The goal of the game is to be the fastest racer around the course gathering the most points.

Critical Evaluation:
In order to play the game one must own a Wii gaming device. One control stick is included with the game when purchased. To enjoy the game with a partner it is necessary to buy an additional control stick (approx. $30). The control sticks each need two AA batteries. Battery life depends on frequency of play, but the control sticks do not seem to excessively drain batteries. The music is typical of video games; repetitive and annoying. To successfully navigate the race tracks a player must be able to deftly manipulate the controls in a fast-paced environment. MarioKart can be played competitively, racer verses racer, or cooperatively, building a team to play against the machine. Common sense and internet safety guidelines should be followed when playing the game via the internet. It is a video game that offers action and fun without shocking graphics. It is easy to begin playing the game, but difficult and frustrating to master.
Player’s Annotation:
Mario, Luigi, and friends are racing again. See if you can beat them through many track selections each with exciting outlandish courses and graphics. Watch out for the Bloopers who spray ink on vehicles reducing visibility.
